Terrace Hospitals

First Hospital in Terrace was on Kalum St. just down the hill, South from the old Police Station.
in 2013 a little north of Don Diegos Restaurant

2nd Hospital
Built by the Army

This hospital became what is now Terraceview Lodge, a Seniors Home

3rd Hospital


The Red Cross Outpost Hospital
established Mar 1, 1948, as a 10 bed Hospital.
An old converted Army building 162, in Area C,
Located on Little Ave. below Hodson Ave, today called Birch Ave.
Today's address- 4520 Little Ave.

4th Hospital
Feb 6, 1960, what is now the “Mills Memorial Hospital” on Haugland Ave. was opened.
Over 600 doctors have worked at that Hospital

Early Terrace Doctors

Over the years I have found researching Doctors is near impossible. They were known by Dr., not Ed or Jim.
Plus names were misspelled, quite frequently I might add.

b- Feb 10, 1878, Trenton, Hastings, ON
shown age 38 in 1916 census in Maple Creek SK
d- Nov 16, 1927, age 49
son of Thomas Howard Bleecker and Isabelle Young
Educated locally in Trenton,
graduated from Queen's Medical School in 1902.
Practiced at Roblin's Mills, PEI County, ON
before Maple Creek SK. and then Prince Rupert.

married Wonita Maud Bleecker, nee Putman,
Dec 23, 1912 at Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma, ON.
b- USA, shown age 34 in 1916 census,
daughter of Monroe Snell and Jennie Foster

Sept 20, 1923 Dr. Bleecker declared bankruptcy in Terrace

Dr. Bleecker and his wife moved to QCI in July 1924.
He left first, followed by his wife, and daughter Leah
He was in Terrace for 3 years prior to moving.
He moved to operate the Government Hospital at Queen Charlotte City, QCI

Dr. Eli “Wilson” Ewart
b- Apr 26, 1894, Bolton ON
d- Apr 1, 1971, West Palm Beach Florida, USA, age 76
ca 1927 in Terrace
Sept 1924 he was established in his office opposite the Post Office
Jan 1925 Dr. Ewart was working in Terrace
Feb 1925 Dr. Ewart from Terrace was making weekly visits to Usk

found a Dr. E. W. Ewart, shown as a surgeon
leaving port of Vancouver for Tacoma WA, Mar 18, 1923, age 28
5 ft 6 in, 147 lbs, Canadian

1945 he is a Dr. living on Victoria st. Westmorland, NB, married 1968 on Victoria st, Moncton NB
He was one of the First Orthopaedic Surgeons in the Maritimes
entered Medical School in Toronto in 1914, graduated in 1921
He served in WWI in the navy between those dates
reg # 3034412, served on Veronica, Royal Navy, Jan 1919
Interned at Toronto and Vancouver.

d- May 21, 1961, DOA Terrace District Hospital*, Terrace BC, age 75
Died from a fire in his residence where he was sleeping.

buried in Kitsumgallum Cemetery, Terrace BC.
*later became Mills Memorial Hospital in his honour.
father- George Gordon Mills, b- Simcoe Co., ON, Canada (1850-1932)
Barrister, founder of the firm Mills & Mills.
mother- Kitty Carolina Jones, b- Gawler, South Australia (1860-1938)

He was age 43 living in Rock Bay BC, when he married
married Edith Jean Parker Sept 8, 1928,
in St. Mary's Church, Kerrisdale, Vancouver BC
b- Apr 14, 1905, Regina SK (Minnatonas, MB in Wedding cert?)
d- May 21, 1961 Lazelle Ave, Terrace BC, age 56
buried in Kitsumgallum Cemetery, Terrace BC.
Died from a fire in Her residence where she was sleeping.
She was age 24, a Registered Nurse, living in Chilliwack BC when she married.

Dr. Mills Bio

Served in WWI, enlisting in Toronto, ON, Apr 20, 1915
attained rank of Captain

Dr. Mills came to Terrace in May 7, 1930 to take over a one bed Hospital from Dr. Brummitt.

Dr. Mills retired as a Medical Doctor in 1957

received lots of recognition for his Fetal Alcohol studies,
has a Clinic (?) named after him in Maple Ridge BC.
Came from Africa to study at Vancouver General Hospital.
His first wife Nadine Asante wrote “ The History of Terrace”

I encourage giving to Mills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop
on Lazelle Ave. next to the Telus building
