Lindsay's Cartage, Moving, Packing, & Storage Delivery Truck ca 1940's The reason I did this page, is I had no idea this Company was as old as it was, as I remember their trucks, all around town in Terrace, and on the highways here in the early 1970's. Looking for a Transfer Company name in Prince Rupert, ca 1910, I tripped over their name. In business as early as 1910 in Prince Rupert As you can see in these ads they were Grand Trunk Pacific Cartage Agents. Here is the tidbits as I know them, can't seem to find much about the company history, so hoping someone can fill in some blanks on that one day. Company address- 1125 Park Ave. in 1916 Lindsay Transfer shown on 4th st, in 1920 Williams Moving and Storage, bought Lindsay's at some point. Possibly ca 1973? Williams then went bankrupt in 2015. Co-Owners shown in 1910 John Andrew “Jack” Lindsay b- June 26, 1877, in Lake district, Sooke area, Victoria BC d- Mar 30, 1958 in Prince Rupert, age 80 buried with his first wife, in Fairview Cemetery, Prince Rupert lived at 1152 Park ave in 1920 by 1930 he also owned Rupert Motors Ltd. built in 1946 at 2nd ave and 1st st.. shown as Manager of Cartage, Automobile Garage, and Stevedoring businesses. John married (1) Hattie Susan Bidding b- Dec 12, 1884, Brainerd, Minnesota, USA d- Dec 9, 1951 in Prince Rupert BC, age 66 immigrated in 1902 daughter of John Bidding and Margaret Roberts Her sister D. H. Bidding was living with them in 1911, a Telephone Operator daughter- Marguerite Lindsay b- June 1905 in USA d- ? shown age 5 in 1911 daughter- Muriel Winnifred Lindsay b- Feb 3, 1909 in Victoria BC d- Apr 10, 1983 in Vancouver BC, age 74 buried in Stewart Cemetery, Stewart BC Lived in Stewart BC stenographer in 1933, at her Dad's garage, Rupert Motors married John McKay, June 2, 1933 in Prince Rupert b- ca 1909 in Vancouver BC Mechanic in 1933 son of Robert McKay and Jennie Cosgrove married (2) Alfred Phillips. daughter- Mildred Helen Lindsay b- ca 1912 in Prince Rupert BC d- Stenographer in 1938 married Albert Ernest Field Dec 8, 1938 in Prince Rupert b- ca 1903 in London England Accountant in 1938 son- John S. “Jack” Lindsay (Jr) b- Sept 12, 1918 in Prince Rupert BC d- Jan 24, 1997 in WA, USA John A. Lindsay married (2) Margaret Craig, his wife when he died. John's Younger Brother, Co-Owner Joseph Robert Lindsay b- Feb 16, 1882 in Lakes District, Sooke area, Victoria, BC d- June 2, 1967 in Prince Rupert BC buried in Fairview Cemetery, Prince Rupert Shown Owner- Cartage Co, Single, when he died. spent 55 years in the Cartage business. 1911 census shows him as a transfer man, Transfer Co. in Rupert. Some later directories show him as a Dairy man in Rupert. But later ones show him as Transferman. Father- George Lindsay b- 1839, in Sligo, Ireland d- Mar 25, 1910 St. Joseph's Hospital, Victoria BC, age 70 Shown as a farmer in 1877 son of John Lindsay, b ca 1806 and Ann Jane, b ca 1814. both buried in Culcross, Bruce Co., ON George was the oldest of about 8 children Mother- Margaret Nicholson b- Apr 5, 1839 in County Kerry, Ireland d- Aug 12, 1918, at the home of her daughter Mary, Mrs Joseph Casey., died age 79 buried in Ross Bay Cemetery daughter of Thomas Nicholson, and Elizabeth Maybury Father and Mother were married Oct 1960, in Culcross, Bruce Co., ON They were considered Pioneers in the Victoria area. They had 10 children: Thomas J. Lindsay b- 1862, (age 19 in 1881), in Bruce Co., ON d- Apr 1913, Portland Oregon, age 51 had a wife and 2 children Mary “Minnie” Lindsay b- ca 1865, age 16, in BC d- Sept 24, 1950 in Seattle WA married Joseph Casey Dec 20, 1890 in Victoria, he was age 22 son of William and Mary Casey George Lindsay (jr) b- ca 1866, age 15, in BC d- 1946 Lived in Montant in 1918 1889 he was ending a partnership with Kester Jennings, husband of his sister. Francis Henry “Frank” Lindsay b- ca 1868, age 13, on Broadmead Farm, in BC d- Oct 3, 1933 in Brentwood Bay, BC Lived in Victoria in 1918 Elizabeth Margaret Lindsay b- ca 1871 in BC d- Jan 27, 1938 in Victoria BC married Kester Jennings, May 5, 1889 in Victoria, he was age 28 son of Thomas and Bessie Jennings Sarah Eleanor Lindsay b- ca 1873 in BC d- 1948 married Joseph Heaney, May 6, 1896 at Cedar Hill Frederick “Fred” William Lindsay b- 1875, in BC, d- 1933 lived in Oregon in 1918 Walter Edward Lindsay b- ca 1879, in BC d- 1957 married Constance Truran, in Jan 1909 He lived in Victoria in 1918 Lindsay family came to BC in 1862 1881 family living at Sooke Lake & Highland, Victoria area, BC Lindsay Road in Sooke area named after this family. 1909 George Lindsay family shown living at Colquitz PR- Albert & McCaffery Ltd.
