He was at one time a Canadian champion target rifleman.
Jack had a passion for aviation which began when he became a Spitfire pilot with Squadron 416 during WWII. He was shot down over France and ended up in Stalag Luft III. He was an integral part of the “Great Escape”. He was next in line to leave the tunnel as the Germans discovered the escape and sounded the alarm. before it was discovered. After the war, In 1946, with Slim Knights he started Port Alberni Airways. ca 1948 they amalgamated with Bob Gayer's Company Associated Air Taxi. They flew up and down the B.C. coast.
The company was sold to Pacific Western Airlines which Jack stayed with. In 1988 PWA bought CPair, and became Canadian Airlines. Jack was a VP during these times,VP Charter & Contract. He was responsible for bringing in the PWA Hurcules & 707 Freighter operation.
He traveled the world seeking out contracts for the Hercules cargo aircraft before retiring in 1979.
